CSV Contacts Fail to Import

PlumLife allows you to import contact data using comma separated value (.csv) files. As the name indicates, the data inside these files are separated by commas to indicate Microsoft Excel-like columns and rows.  For it to work the first line/row must have the exact name of a matching field in our software followed by a comma before the next data name. Then all rows following must have the same number of commas as the first row, with data matching the type as specified in the first row for each comma.

For example

If you had a file with row 1 that looked like this in text:

First Name, Last Name, Address, Home Phone, E-mail Address

Then you might have rows that looked like this text:

Betsy, Smith, 1701 Winston Drive, (214) 555-2271, bsmith@domain.com

Jack, Jackson, ,(731) 555-1734,

Sally, Sue, 873 Winham Meadows, ,sallysue17@domain.com

In a spreadsheet program such as MS Excel, the same data would look like Figure A (see image).

NOTE: Observe in the above examples that the second line (row 2 in Excel) has data for all the fields show in the first example (row 1). But some of the following rows are missing data even though they still have the same number of commas in text and the types of data are present after the same commas which relate to their type in row 1 (e.g. Sally Sue has her email address located after the 4th comma which is where the email address data type is declared in row 1).

It is important to note that comma placement is not a concern when you open these files in Excel. But with Excel it IS important to always preserve the original format when saving. You should ONLY save the data as CSV (MS-DOS, or Macintosh) and never any other format, or else PL may not be able to read it properly afterwards.

Here is a list of all compatible field mappings for PlumLife. If your CSV file doesn’t have any of these, the corresponding data in the rows bellow it will not map properly into PlumLife and will be placed in the Notes field of the resulting contact.
